Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can you review -insert title here-?

While I would like to review each and every anime out there, I just don't have the time. I do appreciate review requests, though (actually, I encourage it since it means people want to hear what I have to say). If the request is for a one-shot OAV, movie, or something fairly short, I may watch and review it in the near future. On the other hand, requesting a lengthy series (like a television show) isn't such a good idea. I firmly stick to my policy of only reviewing series I have seen completely, and usually watch no more than two or three television series at a time. Therefore, it would take me quite awhile to fulfill any review requests for anything more than a few episodes long. I do, however, post mini-reviews of any series I am currently watching in my First Impressions section. Also, I don't review fansubs (see #5).

2. How come -insert title here- got such a bad review? You suck!

It is inevitable that not everyone will agree with what I say. That's fine, we all have different opinions. If I give a bad review to an anime you happen to like, it just means we have a difference of opinion. If you enjoy it, that's great! You don't need me telling you what to think.

3. Have you seen -insert title here- yet?

I do watch more anime than I have time to review. Titles I have seen, but have not covered on my site include: Grave of the Fireflies, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, the Ranma 1/2 movies and TV series, Phantom Quest Corps, Goshogun, Please Save My Earth, and Gunbuster, to name a few. When I get around to re-watching these titles, I'll post full reviews of them.

4. How come you haven't seen -insert title here- yet?

Because I'm human and I don't watch anime 24 hours a day. I try to watch as many anime as time allows, but certain things take priority over watching anime (job, family, friends, etc).

5. How come you don't review fansubs? Some of the best anime are fansubbed!

I don't review fansubs because I just don't have the time to cover both fansubbed and commercial anime. There are so many commercially released anime coming out now, I can barely keep up (actually, I'm way behind). I don't plan on reviewing fansubs now or ever. I'm not against them in any way (aside from distributing fansubs of commercial titles), I just choose not to cover them.

6. You don't review fansubs, but you review hentai? Why?

Like it or not, hentai is a very popular genre. I initially conducted a poll on whether or not I should review hentai titles and the response was 100% in favor of me doing it (I don't remember the exact number of respondents). And it's also one of the most frequently visited sections of my site (despite being updated so infrequently).

7. Can you rate anime out of 10 instead of 5 and/or add more catagories like art, music, plot, etc?

Back when I originally created my site I made a conscious decision to use a single, 5-star rating system. I plan on sticking with it and changing now (with 150+ reviews) would involve far too much work. I believe the ratings should be based on the pure enjoyment of the whole, rather than ranking individual components.

8. Do you have any images or MP3s from -insert series here-?

The only multimedia files I have are already on my site. If you're looking for specific images from a specific title, check my reviews section. If you can't find what you are looking for, then I'd recommend surfing some other anime web sites. The Anime Web Turnpike is a good place to start to find what you are looking for.

9. Can you post video clips or trailers on your site?

Nope. I don't have the space nor bandwidth to do so. I actually would love to be able to do so, but it would drive up the cost of running this site. Since I pay for the entire site out of my own pocket to keep it ad-free, keeping the cost down is a priority.

10. How about posting some nude pics in the hentai reviews section?

Er, no. While I'm not a prude (quite the opposite, actually), I do try to keep the hentai reviews section at least a PG-13 level. I'm not in the business of providing cheap thrills with naked cartoon images, so you'll just have to look elsewhere.

11. Where do you get all your anime? Are you rich or something?

I actually rent almost everything I watch, because it's certainly a lot cheaper than buying videos and DVDs. I have a couple local comic stores with very generous selections from which I rent (if you live in the Ottawa area, check out the "Comic Book Shoppe" in two different locations). I do buy some anime from online stores like DVD Planet and The Right Stuf. I used to buy from Express.com, but they've had many inventory problems over the past year and have not only reduced their anime stock, but also raised their prices.

12. Do you accept review contributions?

I do have a form for submitting reader reviews of titles for which I have written reviews for. However, I don't accept reader reviews of other titles I have not yet covered.

13. Can I post your reviews on my site?

No. I reserve creative control over my reviews and I don't want them anywhere but on this site. If you see any of my reviews posted elsewhere, it has been done so without my permission. The reason I don't want them posted on other sites is two-fold. First, many of my older reviews, by my standards, aren't written extremely well. I have plans to do partial re-writes of old reviews to improve the quality of the writing. Secondly, I sometimes make factual errors which I like to be able to go back and correct. It's just an element of control which I don't want to have taken away.
