Outlanders

This was an somewhat interesting-looking title which I had no knowledge of when I rented it. The only reason I picked it up was the scantily-clad ani-babe wielding a massive sword ordained on the box cover. I'll admit I was somewhat pleasantly surprised. I guess I wasn't expecting very much, and certainly didn't think this movie would be a comedy. An alien princess, Kahm, kidnaps an ordinary guy and intends for him to become her husband. However, her father disagrees rather strongly with her choice and soon the two of them are running for their lives. I ended up laughing a fair bit at the silly antics of the characters and the ridiculous situations. While some of the humor is outright silly, a lot of it is also rather sexual in nature, complete with some rather dubious puns. While this anime is decidedly science fiction, there are elements of action, fantasy, romance, and lots of comedy which make this a rather cross-genre experience. The characters were rather engaging, which helped make it fun to watch. Princess Kahm was pretty spunky and likable, I was rooting for her as she tried to win over her kidnap victim, Tetsuya. There's also a decent amount of action to keep things exciting. If you've got an hour to kill and you want some laughs, then go rent yourself Outlanders. The Verdict: * * * (average)
