Oh, boy. After watching anime like the All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku and The Slayers, I didn't think anything could get any sillier. But those two are downright serious compared to the utterly nutty Dragon Half.
Just take a gander at those shots and you'll see what I mean when I say nutty. Dragon Half makes liberal use of the super-deformed style of animation with hilarious results. The characters will switch between stoic heroism one minute to incredibly cute the next. Even their voices increase a few octaves to reflect this. The entire tone of the series is set from the get go, and the humor has the subtlety of a baseball bat upside the head. Just try not to laugh, I dare you. And definitely make sure to watch the ending credits. The credits sequence is a spectacle unto itself.
Everything about the characters is incredibly charming. Just look at Mink. Have you seen anything cuter? I didn't think so. Everyone from the villainess Vina to the stupefied Damaramu ("I, Damaramu shall regret this!") has their own unique charm. I can't think of a single character I didn't like. Mind you, their ultra-cute appearances and behavior might turn a few stomachs. But I found them irresistible.
The background artwork is generally good and at times even breathtaking. The character art, however, is very simplified and reminiscent of Western cartoons. Of course, the super-deformed style contributed to this.
There were a few times when Dragon Half got a little too silly for its own good. After all, I could only take so much high-pitched squealing of the characters before I needed a break. You may want to pop in something more serious afterwards for relief.
And unfortunately, by the time you get to the end of the second episode, it's over all too quickly. Only two episodes were ever made, which is a shame. A series like this could go on for much longer.
If you're the type who can stomach the cutest of cute, then go check out Mink and her gang. Although, you may want to bring along a bottle of Pepto, just in case.
The Verdict: * * * 1/2 (above average)
