Horror is always an iffy genre to play in. How far can a concept be pushed before it stops being scary and starts being funny? Just what twists and scares will the audience buy? Is the plot there at all? All these dangers make Rumiko's success that much more fulfilling. Mermaid Forrest is a marvelously told story of the horror that comes with immortality. The characters all went a level deeper than most horrors would dare to venture (yes, even Mana, whose final lines perfectly summed up the true nature of the film) and the twists were unexpected and rewarding. The plot falls into place as the movie pulls together into a powerful and meaningful climax and a strong and satisfying ending. The animation (except for some unusal water effects) isn't anything special, especially with the monsters, but the beautiful storytelling makes up for that. Watch Mermaid Forest. Watch Mermaid Forest again and pull in even more information. The story goes deeper every time.
