First, Samurai Pizza Cats parodied the incredibly popular kid's show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now we have Shineman taking a stab at Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.
If you had no clue that this was a parody and little knowledge of modern pop culture, then you'd probably end up bored stiff by this movie. Everyone else, however, should find it outright hilarious. The whole ridiculousness of this movie alone makes it humorous. From the silly names ("Shinesman Moss Green!"), to the rampant over-posturing, to the incredibly corny plot, Shinesman really does a good job of parodying its ilk. To help amplify the humor, various one-liners are added to the mix with references to everything from long-distance telephone companies to South Park. Everyone will probably have a favorite line or two, and the South Park line is easily my personal fave.
The plot... well, the plot is rather insignificant. It's just a silly rehashing of the old "aliens trying to conquer Earth". In any other case this would simply be lame, but here it's lame on purpose. The characters are quite funny and charming, even if they're a little under-developed and difficult to tell apart sometimes. I took a bit of a shining (sorry, couldn't resist ^_^) to "Shinesman Salmon Pink", even though I'm not entirely sure why (must've had something to do with the fact she could crush an unopened drink can with one hand).
Shinesman has pretty average visuals, with decent art and animation, but nothing eye-popping. The English voice-acting was surprisingly good on the whole. Characters had the knack of timing the lines just right, combined with the proper tone and articulation.
If you're looking for some laughs then I'd recommend you grab a copy of Shinesman. Do so especially if you hate the Power Rangers.
The Verdict: * * * 1/2 (above average)
