Unaware of this, Kaiji eagerly follows Endou, hoping for a chance to participate in another gamble, but soon finds out the loan shark's real intentions when he is kidnapped.
Given that Kaiji is unable to pay off his huge debt, the Teiai Group instead sends him to work in an underground labor camp. He is told that he will have to live in this hell for 15 years, alongside other debtors, until he can earn his freedom. His only hope to put an early end to this nightmare is by saving enough money to be able to go back to the surface for a single day. Once he is there, he plans to obtain the remaining money needed to settle his account by making a high-stakes wager. However, as many temptations threaten his scarce income, Kaiji may have to resort to gambling sooner than he had expected.

Animation and Soundtrack
In terms of animation, Madhouse continues its nuanced take on Najawa Nobuyuki’s distinct art style. The characters are worn, reflecting their hard-knock lives, which adds to the overall grim aesthetic of the series. The daunting background scores and sound effects further embellish the tension-filled ambiance. Kurosawa Tomisaburo’s opening theme, “Chase the Light,” deserves a particular mention for its invigorating energy that perfectly complements the show’s intense mood.
Perhaps the real grandeur of this series lies in its vivid portrayal of diverse characters and their incredible development. Kaiji is not your typical invincible protagonist – he fails, suffers, but never loses hope. This human aspect of the lead, combined with the intriguing personalities of the supporting characters, makes for compelling watching.
Overall, “Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Hakairoku-hen” is a riveting saga of survival and strategy. It’s the kind of anime that commands your attention, testing your moral compass and making you wonder – what choice would I make?
