Anime Review: Hunter x Hunter: Greed Island Final – A Game of High Stakes!

Hunter x Hunter: Greed Island Final is a continuation of the Hunter X Hunter series which follows the journey of the cheerful and determined Gon Freecss as he searches for his absentee father, who abandoned him to become a Hunter, an elite class of adventurer with license to track down secret treasures, rare beasts, or even other individuals. However, he isn’t alone; his journey is joined by the revenge-driven Kurapika, the powerful ex-assassin Killua, and the kindly and wise Leorio. The one common factor the soldiers share is that they are all budding Hunters, looking to carve their own destiny in this chaotic and complex world that is ruled by both men and monsters.

The Greed Island Final saga, as the moniker suggests, transports our heroes into a videogame called Greed Island – a creation of Gon’s elusive father. It’s a gaming world where real and virtual lives blur together, with the stakes of losing one’s life increasing with every roll of the dice. Players utilize a collection of spell cards that, when activated, can cast spells, enchant objects, or call forth powerful creatures. With a mysterious and dangerous killer lurking and the goal of defeating the game’s final boss to retrieve a rare item that may shed light on Gon’s father’s whereabouts, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Now, matters of life and death are a mere part of the game.

Story and Characters

Hunter x Hunter: Greed Island Final’s narrative retains the series’ engaging blend of action, adventure, and rollicking fun, dialling up the tension by another notch. Death is a very real risk in the game, making every decision and battle absolutely gripping. Our trio of protagonists continues to evolve, with Gon’s indefatigable optimism challenged by the ruthless realities of the game, while Killua’s icy faҫade slowly thaws to reveal deeper insecurities and determination. New additions to the character roster are equally compelling and richly-drawn.

Animation and Sound

The animation quality by studio Nippon Animation remains consistent with the series, filled with dynamic, detailed environments in the Greed Island that are a pleasure to explore. Character designs maintain their distinct and quirky charm, while the battles are animated with thrilling fluidity and kinetic punch. The soundtrack escalates the excitement and ominous undertones, with a mix of peppy tunes for the lighter moments and rousing orchestral pieces for the intense confrontations.

Verdict

Hunter x Hunter: Greed Island Final stands as an electrifying arc in the Hunter x Hunter saga that ups the ante in terms of stakes, character development, and suspense. Despite a plot focused on a video game, it never loses sight of its themes of friendship, perseverance, and self-discovery. For fans of the series, it’s an absolute must-watch. For newbies, it’s a compelling reason to dive into the world of Hunter x Hunter.

This adventure is worth buying, streaming, and rewatching for its blend of high-stakes tension, emotional growth, surprising twists, and thrilling battles. A worthy addition to the roster of any anime lover!
