Conan was the only child born on Remnant Island, a place settled by a group of refugees while they fled a terrifying wave of magnetic bombs that wiped out most of humanity. After 20 years, most of the castaways have died, save for Conan and the wise old man that raised him.
Believing Remnant Island to be the last inhabited place on Earth, Conan is shocked when he discovers a young girl named Lana washed up on the beach one day. Though he is thrilled to learn that humanity has survived, Lana tells him the nation of Industria wants her as a hostage to force her grandfather, Dr. Lao, to power their machinery. Their conversation is cut short when Industria's top pilot, Monsley, suddenly appears and seizes Lana. Determined to save her, Conan immediately sets off from Remnant Island and begins a journey that will ultimately determine the fate of the world.
Mirai Shounen Conan, also known as Future Boy Conan, is a post-apocalyptic science fiction anime series, based on Alexander Key’s novel “The Incredible Tide”. The backdrop of the series is a world where civilization has been decimated and people fight for survival in a harsh and often unforgiving environment.
The story revolves around Conan, a young boy who is possibly the last remaining earthling on a remote island. He comes across Lana, a girl who is hunted by an evil organization. The girl promises of a brighter future, a place filled with hopes and dreams. Fueled by his innate hope and relentless energy, Conan embarks on an adventure with Lana to find this utopia, all while fighting off adversaries they encounter on their journey.
Future Boy Conan differs from the mainstream anime storylines by using a post-apocalyptic setting. This anime hooks you with a powerful motif of survival against all odds and relentless hope. The character development is slow-burning but fascinating; Conan grows from an innocent child into a brave protagonist ready to defend his friends at any cost. Lana, too, shows considerable character growth, transforming from a damsel in distress into a beacon of hope and determination.
As for art and animation, the series’ early 70’s aesthetic is nostalgically appealing with a unique sense of charm. Despite its age, the animation is fluid and kinetic, filled with vivid colors and dynamic movement, beautifully capturing the hardships and wins Conan faces throughout his journey.
Moving on to the sound/music, the series offers a heartwarming soundtrack. The BGM aptly complements the scenes without overshadowing them. The SFX are worth mentioning as they add authentic ambience to the series, from blowing winds to rustling leaves.
For a series that deals with heavy themes such as post-apocalypse and survival, Future Boy Conan does an outstanding job keeping the ambiance light-hearted and adventurous. It’s a beautiful blend of characters, plot, animation, and sound that keeps you glued to your screen, episode after episode. It’s an old but gold gem that every anime enthusiast should watch at least once.
Whether you should rent, stream, or buy it? Well, I’d say it’s definitely worth owning. But if you are new to the world of classic anime, a good start would be streaming it first before making the buying commitment.
