The Demon Lord Tasogare's castle is a dark and frightening place, filled to the brim with various monsters. Any soul unfortunate enough to be imprisoned here is sure to be terrified by the horrors within. However, the human princess Aurora Suya Rhys "Syalis" Kaymin is a different case. Rather indifferent to her situation, Syalis worries about one thing and one thing only—sleep. Ever since the demon lord kidnapped her from her kingdom, she has not had a single good night's rest.
To alleviate her dozen dozing issues, the princess makes do with what she can find in the castle. Whether it be the fur of fluffy demonic teddy bears or the silky, blanket-like bodies of ghost shrouds, everything is but a means to ensure a peaceful slumber. With so many potential materials to craft items that can help her sleep at her disposal, nothing will stop the sleepy princess—not even death.
The Anime Critic’s Review: “Maoujou de Oyasumi”
The story of “Maoujou de Oyasumi,” or “Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle,” revolves around Princess Syalis, a young princess from the human kingdom who is kidnapped by the Demon King and imprisoned in his castle. As the title implies, our princess protagonist has one primary goal: to get a good night’s sleep. However, the Demon Castle is certainly not equipped with the accommodations she is used to in her human kingdom.
The storyline sees Syalis embarking on an imaginative hunt for various items and creatures that can help her sleep better. From fluffy pillows to sleeping potions, the princess won’t rest (literally) until her dismal sleeping conditions improve. A comedic twist on the classic princess-and-demon-king trope, “Maoujou de Oyasumi” combines the absurd with the adorable, resulting in an anime that’s both unique and entertaining.
Storyline and Characters
The narrative of “Maoujou de Oyasumi” is cleverly structured, playing upon the repetitive situation in a creative and thrilling manner. Each episode comprises of Princess Syalis’ quirky endeavors to improve her sleeping situation. This might sound mundane, but the show does a commendable job of making every escapade different and more hilarious than the previous one.
Princess Syalis, herself is a captivating protagonist. Her relentless and creative pursuit of comfort, coupled with her adorably aloof attitude, makes her endearing to viewers. The interactions between her and the various demons are highly amusing, as they’re typically used to terror and intimidation, not quests for cozy blankets.
Art and Animation
The animation style of “Maoujou de Oyasumi” is a visual treat, with a pastel colour palette that perfectly complements the comedic tone of the show. The character designs provide an interesting contrast between the cutesy Princess Syalis and the initially sinister-looking, although quickly endearing, demons.
Additionally, the series does not shy away from mixing up its art style every now and again – including some surprisingly detailed chibi scenes and hilarious facial expressions. The animation in the series is fluid and colorful, which helps to add to the series’ overall joyous ambience.
Music and Sound
The music in this series blends well with its tone. The light and cheerful soundtrack perfectly captures the whimsical antics of Syalis. The opening and ending themes are catchy and complement the show nicely. Voice acting deserves applause, notably Inori Minase who brilliantly captured Syalis’ cuteness and playful mischievousness.
Final Thoughts
“Maoujou de Oyasumi” is far from your typical princess story and that is exactly why it works beautifully. This anime is a perfect blend of comedy and cuteness with a dash of adventure. If you’re a fan of light-hearted, comedic anime, then sleeping on “Maoujou de Oyasumi” would indeed be a nightmare! Highly recommended for streaming and buying!
