Anime Review: Yuru Yuri Nachuyachumi!+
Yuru Yuri Nachuyachumi!+ showcases the everyday delightfully random adventures of the Amusement Club, a group of friends from Nanamori Middle School. This special two-episode mini-series follows our lovable characters Akari Akaza, Kyoko Toshino, Yui Funami, and Chinatsu Yoshikawa, who form a unique club in an unused room specially dedicated to their randomness and fun.
The group’s shenanigans don’t stop at their clubroom door. In their pursuit of making the most out of their middle school lives, they end up visiting different places and engaging in assorted activities, displaying the charm of ordinary and extraordinary life occurrences. Through picnics, day trips, trekking, hot spring visits, a customary Japanese summer festival, and more – it’s just a typical day in the lives of the Amusement Club members. But as regular viewers will know, for these spirited girls, nothing’s ever that simple.
From the get-go, Yuru Yuri Nachuyachumi!+ immediately plunges viewers into its colorful and lively slice-of-life content, seamlessly carrying over the cheerfulness that has so far characterized the series. The beautifully animated and vivid visuals are a real treat, illuminating the essence of the characters and the environment they inhabit.
The narrative structure embodies the epitome of casualness, promoting free-flowing dialogues and a nonlinear storyline whilst maintaining the quintessence of the anime’s slice-of-life genre. The calm, warm, and joyous atmosphere that Yuru Yuri is famous for is intact in this series that will make you feel relaxed, as if spending time with old friends. The episodes perfectly encapsulate the joys, silliness, and even the moments of somber quiet that come as part and parcel of friendship.
As always, the strength of Yuru Yuri Nachuyachumi!+ lies in its characters. They are not just flat 2D personas, but they develop and grow on their own, all while remaining incredibly entertaining and endearing. The chemistry of the club members is undeniably charming, and their interpersonal reactions are a continual delight. From Yui’s calmness and Akari’s kind-hearted nature to Chinatsu’s infatuation with Yui and finally Kyoko’s flamboyance, each character has their unique trait which blends with the others splendidly, forming an entertaining mix of personalities.
Sound design is perfectly on point. Both the opening and ending music does a great job setting and wrapping up the show, respectively, whilst the background score throughout the episodes often adds a whole new layer that elevates the overall experience. The sound effects are also used to great comedic effect, adding a punchline or emphasis where necessary.
Yuru Yuri Nachuyachumi!+ is a fantastic addition to the Yuru Yuri series, bringing back the same heartwarming spirit that fans fell in love with in the first place. Even without a typical plot driving things forward, you can enjoy every episode for its own merits. It’s a perfect mixture of light-hearted fun, zany comedy, and friendship themes that make a fine slice-of-life anime. For any viewer, casual or superfan, this series should have something to offer.
If you loved the original series or are a fan of slice-of-life anime that focuses on the joy of just living and hanging out with friends, then I highly recommend that you consider renting, buying, or streaming Yuru Yuri Nachuyachumi!+.
