Review Section

Presentation & Animation: The animation in this film is an undeniable treat to the eyeballs. It does an excellent job of capturing the vibrant and thrilling world of Pokemon while tastefully making Mewtwo’s stormy island an eerie yet beautiful sight altogether. Though it was originally released in the late 1990s, the animation quality still holds up surprisingly well even now.

Plot & Themes: Mewtwo no Gyakushuu brilliantly explores the theme of existence, purpose, and identity through the character of Mewtwo. The protagonist’s exploration about his identity as a Pokemon and his rightful place in the world adds depth to his character and makes the story less of a straight-laced hero vs villain tale. The story is an emotional roller-coaster, replete with intense battles, heartwarming friendship, and even sorrowful losses.

Characters: Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, and the rest of the gang, remain as charming as ever, but the real star of the show is Mewtwo. This film does a thorough job of painting a vivid portrait of Mewtwo’s internal struggles. It also does a fantastic job of portraying the bond between the Pokemon and their trainers – a theme that remains central to the entire franchise.
