Tightly clutching his Gibson guitar, Mafuyu Satou steps out of his dark apartment to begin another day of his high school life. While taking a nap in a quiet spot on the gymnasium staircase, he has a chance encounter with fellow student Ritsuka Uenoyama, who berates him for letting his guitar's strings rust and break. Noticing Uenoyama's knowledge of the instrument, Satou pleads for him to fix it and to teach him how to play. Uenoyama eventually agrees and invites him to sit in on a jam session with his two band mates: bassist Haruki Nakayama and drummer Akihiko Kaji.

Satou's voice is strikingly beautiful, filling Uenoyama with the determination to make Satou the lead singer of the band. Though reticent at first, Satou takes the offer after an emotional meeting with an old friend. With the support of his new friends, Satou must not only learn how to play guitar, but also come to terms with the mysterious circumstances that led him to be its owner.

An Enthralling Symphony of Emotions: Given Anime Review

Given’s story commences with Ritsuka Uenoyama, a tired high school student with a passion for playing guitar, finding his everyday life turned on its head after a chance encounter with Mafuyu Sato. Mafuyu, a quiet and seemingly detached boy, is carrying a broken guitar when Ritsuka crosses his path. Strikingly, Mafuyu seems devoid of any musical knowledge, yet carries this broken guitar as if it’s an irreplaceable part of himself. Ritsuka is somehow drawn to Mafuyu’s peculiar circumstances and offers to fix his guitar, thus marking the beginning of an unexpected connection.

As the story unfolds, we witness how music serves as a medium that allows these characters to navigate through and unveil their entangled emotions, painful pasts, and aspirations. Though essentially primed as a music-oriented slice of life anime, Given elevates itself to much more. It is a poignant tale of love, loss, healing, and acceptance that delves into the intricate array of human emotions with a perfect balance of subtlety and intensity.

Musical Melody and Emotional Depth: Show’s Execution

Where Given truly shines is its delicate handling of the characters’ complex personalities, their histories, and the deep connections they form with each other. Mafuyu’s silent suffering, Ritsuka’s quiet understanding, and their intricate dance of growing affection are poetically presented. The seamless blend of music and emotion results in a symphony that hits every note.

Visual and Auditory Brilliance: The Importance of Artistic Excellence

Turning our attention to the aesthetics of Given, the visuals are tastefully crafted with a distinct style that complements the tone of the series. The color palette chosen carries a serene hue, sinking viewers deeper into the story. The soundtrack is equally notable- as an anime revolving around music, Given boasts compositions that breathe life into the narrative, intertwining seamlessly with the unfolding drama and adding depth at every juncture.

The Radiant Symphony: Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Given is an anime that offers much more than what meets the eye. It is a melodic journey of emotions that weaves a tale of love and acceptance through its gripping narrative and enthralling characters. For those interested in a heartfelt narrative underscored by powerful music, Given is a must-watch.

If you are not certain whether Given would meet your anime expectations, I recommend streaming it for the first few episodes. However, for connoisseurs of music-based anime or elegant portrayal of well-rounded characters & relationships, buying or renting Given would be an excellent investment. Given is an anime that stirs your heartstrings and leaves an indelible mark, a series that one would savor watching over and over again.

Rating: 4.5/5

From the tempo of its narrative to the rhythm of its characters’ journeys, Given orchestrates a harmonious symphony that is sure to enchant viewers. Watch it to immerse yourself in a beautiful musical journey intertwined with a stirring romance that will leave you asking for an encore.

Pros
Given is a beautifully executed drama that seamlessly blends music and romance. It stands out for its sensational soundtrack, complex characters, and its tasteful portrayal of LGBT relationships.
Cons
The anime 'Given' can feel slow-paced, and its focus on subtlety might not appeal to viewers who prefer more dramatic or action-filled storylines. Some might also find the music element not thoroughly explored as expected.
Summary

We delve into a meticulous exploration of emotions and character development. Prepare to be immersed in heartfelt dialogues, realistic melodrama, and an enchanting soundtrack. Vinland Saga

Wit Studio
24 episodes · TV Completed
8.75

Young Thorfinn grew up listening to the stories of old sailors that had traveled the ocean and reached the place of legend, Vinland. It's said to be warm and fertile, a place where there would be no need for fighting—not at all like the frozen village in Iceland where he was born, and certainly not like his current life as a mercenary. War is his home now. Though his father once told him, "You have no enemies, nobody does. There is nobody who it's okay to hurt," as he grew, Thorfinn knew that nothing was further from the truth.

The war between England and the Danes grows worse with each passing year. Death has become commonplace, and the viking mercenaries are loving every moment of it. Allying with either side will cause a massive swing in the balance of power, and the vikings are happy to make names for themselves and take any spoils they earn along the way. Among the chaos, Thorfinn must take his revenge and kill Askeladd, the man who murdered his father. The only paradise for the vikings, it seems, is the era of war and death that rages on.

Introduction

Vinland Saga, transcending the normative shōnen anime, is woven seamlessly into the fabric of Nordic history. Originally penned by Makoto Yukimura, it was adapted into an anime with a gripping storyline, endowing this historical tale with an immersive narrative. It is an intensely realistic story about life, war, and consequences set amidst the backdrop of the Viking era.

The Viking era is viewed through the eyes of young Thorfinn who lives in a peaceful village in Iceland. Life is calm and serene until the brutal Vikings led by Askeladd raid and destroy everything. A tragic incident initiates Thorfinn’s saga of revenge and self-discovery, which leads him through numerous historic events and epic battles where he meets a variety of vibrant characters, each having their own unique ethos and motives.

Review

Right from the onset, Vinland Saga treats its viewers with highly detailed animation and intense sound design that breathes life into its setting. It doesn’t simply tell a typical revenge story, but narrates an unforgettable tale of redemption, growth, and purpose, shaped by both, the landscape of harsh war and the strong undercurrents of its morally grey characters.

The series incorporates unique storytelling elements worthy of its historical significance. It flawlessly melds visceral battle scenes with personal character development, resulting in a narrative that is as intellectually engrossing as it is visually spectacular. The quality of the animation by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan fame) is impeccable, making each episode a visual treat.

Strong character development is at the heart of the Vinland Saga. The transformation of Thorfinn from an innocent youth to a hardened warrior and finally towards a path of pacifism is narrated exceptionally. His complex relationship with Askeladd, the antagonist, forms the core of the series. Their dynamic, fraught with tension yet laden with an undeniable mutual understanding, keeps viewers hooked.

One can’t overlook the expertly deployed thematic elements. The series effectively juxtaposes the Norsemen’s romanticized pursuit of a warrior’s death against the harsh truths of war and its aftermath. This exploration of contrasting ideologies creates a thought-provoking blend of mind and heart, starkly highlighting the futility of revenge.

Verdict

Calling Vinland Saga an immersive and epic historical saga would be an understatement. It is a piece of art that lives up to the heroic ethos of its Viking characters, becoming a sublime gloss on the human condition, characterized by its fantastically intricate plot, exceptional character development, and stunning animation.

Whether to rent, stream or purchase would be a decision dependent on an individual’s love for nuanced narratives blended with historical context. However, if tales of survival, redemption, and introspection attract you, then Vinland Saga is a must watc, undoubtedly deserving its place in your anime library.

As ‘The Anime Critic,’ I implore those who are remotely interested or intrigued by Vinland Saga, not to miss out on experiencing this magnificent saga!
