The series touches upon a soul-stirring combination of empowering musical performances, captivating character development, and a vibrant palette of emotions portrayed beautifully through high-quality animation.

Character growth this season is top-notch. The animation is stunning, fluid and vibrant, capturing the energy and passion of live performances magnificently. The series uses its visuals effectively to underline the atmosphere and emotions, rendering an immersive viewing experience.

If there’s one thing to critique, it would be that the story sometimes falls into patterns that might feel repetitive, but this scarcely weighed down the overall experience.

Dorohedoro

MAPPA
12 episodes · TV Completed
8.05

Hole—a dark, decrepit, and disorderly district where the strong prey on the weak and death is an ordinary occurrence—is all but befitting of the name given to it. A realm separated from law and ethics, it is a testing ground to the magic users who dominate it. As a race occupying the highest rungs of their society, the magic users think of the denizens of Hole as no more than insects. Murdered, mutilated, and made experiments without a second thought, the powerless Hole dwellers litter the halls of Hole's hospital on a daily basis.

Possessing free access to and from the cesspool, and with little challenge to their authority, the magic users appear indomitable to most—aside for a few. Kaiman, more reptile than man, is one such individual. He hunts them on a heedless quest for answers with only a trusted pair of bayonets and his immunity to magic. Cursed by his appearance and tormented by nightmares, magic users are his only clue to restoring his life to normal. With his biggest obstacle being his stomach, his female companion Nikaidou, who runs the restaurant Hungry Bug, is his greatest ally.

Set in a gritty world of hellish design, Dorohedoro manages a healthy blend of comedy and lightheartedness with death and carnage. Taking plenty of twists and turns while following the lives of Hole's residents, it weaves a unique world of unearthly origin and dreary appearance not for the squeamish or easily disturbed.

ANIME CRITIC REVIEW: DOROHEDORO

What’s up, anime enthusiasts? Welcome back! Today, we’re diving into the eccentric and thrilling world of ‘Dorohedoro’, an unconventional mix of dystopia and dark humor that’s genuinely a breath of fresh air in the anime world. Strap in, because we’re about to explore the Hole, a decayed city ruled by sorcerers who use the city’s inhabitants as unwitting test subjects for their spells.

Imagine waking up one day with no memories of your previous life, a large lizard head instead of a human one, and a ludicrously strong sense of purpose to find out who you used to be, and you have the protagonist of our story, Caiman. Alongside his best friend, Nikaido, who happens to be a kick-ass restaurateur, they set on a mission against sorcerers to reclaim Caiman’s true identity. A strange man inside Caiman’s mouth poses an existential question to anyone he bites, sparking a complex web of stories filled with compelling characters, twisted fascination, and a mystery that will keep you glued ’til the end.

THE REVIEW

First thing that strikes you with ‘Dorohedoro’ is its distinctly grungy and hyper-stylized artwork that sets it apart from most anime you might come across. The visual aesthetics drawn from Q Hayashida’s original manga packs a punchy, industrial vibe to it that feels just right in the grimy city setting – Kudos to MAPPA Studio for doing justice to the original art.

The characterization is a real highpoint in the series. Our humanoid lizard, Caiman, is instantly likeable with his mixed bag of ferocity, kindness, and an undying love for gyoza. Nikaido, the female lead, is a total badass – she fights and cooks with vim and vigor. Even the supposed ‘antagonists’, the sorcerers, are not shallow villains, but deeply flawed individuals that you can’t help but empathize with.

Now, the plot isn’t for the faint-hearted – there’s plenty of dark comedy, gore, and magic entangled in a macabre dance. The narrative is steeped in mysteries within mysteries that will keep the viewer hooked, but at times, it can feel a touch convoluted. However, the fast-paced nature of the story seldom gives you time to dwell on it.

Visually, the CGI is controversial – it’s not the most polished you’ll ever see, but it adds to the slightly off-kilter tone of the series perfectly. The theme song by (K)NoW_NAME sticks to your skull, and it is a worthy addition to your anime music playlist.

THE VERDICT

In conclusion, ‘Dorohedoro’ is an excellent anime experience with its stylized visuals, compelling characters, and thought-provoking plot. It’s a wild ride that breaks the mold, and for all its surreal gore and gritty aesthetics, it is a genre-bending masterpiece in its own right.

If you’re open to experiencing a darker, grittier side of anime that keeps you guessing every step of the way, ‘Dorohedoro’ warrants a must-watch. To rent, buy, or to stream it, well that’s entirely up to the viewer’s preference, but this critic assures you, it’s bound to be a rewarding watch that would leave you hungry for more.

Stay tuned for more anime reviews and remember, there’s a whole world of anime out there waiting to be discovered. Until next time, this is ‘The Anime Critic’, signing off. Keep it classy, Anime lovers!

Pros
Dorohedoro excels in its progressively engaging narrative and well thought out world-building. Its unique and polished animation style accompanied by multidimensional characters contributes to an enthralling viewing experience.
Cons
The complex storyline of Dorohedoro can be challenging to follow and may turn off viewers who prefer simpler narratives. Additionally, the anime's intense violence and mature themes make it inappropriate for younger audiences.
Summary
Dorohedoro exhibits an intriguing amalgamation of morbid aesthetics, grotesque violence, and engaging storyline that is rooted in a chaotic world. Featuring distinct, well-fleshed out characters with unique personalities, the anime delves into the grittier side of magical haves and have-nots. This grotesque but absurdly fun series is a compelling watch for those with a penchant for dark, surreal fantasies and ironically humorous narratives.

Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!

Science SARU
12 episodes · TV Completed
8.13

Midori Asakusa sees the world a bit differently. Always having her nose in a sketchbook, Asakusa draws detailed landscapes and backgrounds of both the world around her and the one within her boundless imagination. Even the simple act of doodling on a wall evolves into an emergency repair on the outer hull of her spaceship. She is only brought back to reality by her best friend Sayaka Kanamori. The pair are stark opposites, with Asakusa's childlike wonder contrasted by Kanamori's calculated approach to life.

After a chance encounter where the two "save" the young model Tsubame Misuzaki from her overprotective bodyguard, a connection instantly sparks between Asakusa and Misuzaki, as both share an intense passion for art and animation. Whereas Asakusa is interested in backgrounds and settings, Misuzaki loves drawing the human form. Sensing a money-making opportunity, Kanamori suggests that they start an animation club, which they disguise as a motion picture club since the school already has an anime club. Thus begins the trio's journey of producing animation that will awe the world.

From the brilliant mind of Masaaki Yuasa, Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! is a love letter to animation, wildly creative in its approach, and a testament to the potential of the medium.

Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! – A Dive into Childhood Dreams

Story Synopsis

Our story follows three first-year high school girls who form a club with the sole purpose of making anime- The Eizouken (Film Research Club). Asakusa Midori, our main character, is a small and introverted girl with a grand appreciation for anime and the imaginary worlds it brings to life. Her childhood drawings of her dream worlds are brought to life with the aid of her best friend and talented animator Mizusaki Tsubame.

One day while trying to save Mizusaki from a weird situation, they come across the rich and persuasive Kanamori Sayaka who sees potential in their talent for anime production. Seeing their potential as a goldmine, Sayaka decides to join their team and becomes their stoic manager who handles the realities of business and production while our other two characters navigate the world of character and world creation.

Review

Art & Production

Eizouken shines with its unique and detailed animation style thanks to the skilled hands of Science Saru studio. The imagination process that Midori and Tsubame go through to portray their ideas are beautifully translated on the screen, taking viewers on a ride through their wild imaginations. Their childish excitement when creating these worlds is palpable and infectious. It’s a pleasure to watch.

The animation is littered with fantastical elements and sketch-like scenery that adds to the aesthetic value of the show. The sound design is just as praise-worthy which goes hand in hand with the animation to transport you into the worlds of our main characters’ creation.

Character Development & Story

Our trio of main characters have different personalities that drive the story forward. Asakusa and Mizusaki’s love for the creative process of anime making feels very authentic, genuine, and it’s contagious! Meanwhile, Kanamori is considerably the pillar that holds this best friend group together by tackling the business side of things. Her ruthless sensibility brings a semblance of reality into this dreamlike anime.

The story presents us with three high school girls dabbling in the world of anime creation, but the deeper you get, the more you realize it is ultimately a celebration of creativity, passion, and the art of storytelling. The series does get technical with anime production but does it in a way that can be engaging even for those who have no background in animation.

Verdict

‘Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!’ or ‘Keep Your Hands off Eizouken!’ is a unique anime that perfectly balances its most outlandish concepts with realistic problems and solutions. The characters, animation style, the music – every element complements each other beautifully to create an anime like no other.

My final verdict would be to definitely stream it, experience, and immerse yourself in this grand celebration of creativity, and if you’re a fan of the medium, it definitely deserves a place in your physical collection.

Here’s to all the quiet dreamers, the passionate creators, the tireless producers… Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! This anime is for you.

Id:Invaded

NAZ
13 episodes · TV Completed
7.83

The Mizuhanome System is a highly advanced development that allows people to enter one of the most intriguing places in existence—the human mind. Through the use of so-called "cognition particles" left behind at a crime scene by the perpetrator, detectives from the specialized police squad Kura can manifest a criminal's unconscious mind as a bizarre stream of thoughts in a virtual world. Their task is to explore this psychological plane, called an "id well," to reveal the identity of the culprit.

Not just anyone can enter the id wells; the prerequisite is that you must have killed someone yourself. Such is the case for former detective Akihito Narihisago, who is known as "Sakaido" inside the id wells. Once a respected member of the police, tragedy struck, and he soon found himself on the other side of the law.

Nevertheless, Narihisago continues to assist Kura in confinement. While his prodigious detective skills still prove useful toward investigations, Narihisago discovers that not everything is as it seems, as behind the seemingly standalone series of murder cases lurks a much more sinister truth.

Id:Invaded: A Journey Through The Human Psyche

Synopsis:

The story of Id:Invaded unfolds in a futuristic world where technology has advanced to the point where it’s possible to invade the human mind. A team of talented detectives and specialists use a system known as Mizuhanome to dive into the minds, or “id wells,” of serial killers and other criminal masterminds. The main protagonist, Akihito Narihisago, a brilliant detective formerly known as “The Brilliant Detective Sakaido,” finds himself caught in this web of technology, using his analytical prowess to solve cases from within these id wells.

In his journey, Narihisago encounters twisted and surreal landscapes that reflect the psyche of the criminal minds, each one a different world with its unique set of puzzles and mysteries. The beauty of the series lies within this setup; the exploration of human consciousness and the depths to which a mind can plunge into darkness. Narihisago must navigate these treacherous mental landscapes, solve the puzzles hidden within, and pierce the secrets of the human mind.

Review:

Animation and Visuals:

Id:Invaded boasts excellent visuals, serving up a visual feast right from the get-go. The id wells, each representing a different mind, are designed with a surrealistic approach. The notion of the human psyche being plunged into such chaos, depicted through distorted landscapes and bizarre locales, enhances the viewing experience. It presents a striking, stark contrast between the real world and the depths of the criminal mind, admirably brought to life by the animation studio NAZ.

Story and Character Development:

The narrative of Id:Invaded is intrigue-laden and steeped in suspense. Your seat’s edge will become your permanent residence as case by case, Narihisago and his team delve into the psyche of broken human souls. Notably, the character development of Narihisago is heartfelt and dramatic. His transformation from a jaded detective to a determined protagonist battling his inner demons is genuinely moving. Secondary characters also add depth to the plot, providing a well-rounded viewing experience.

Ambiance and Unique Elements:

The overarching futuristic setting and cyberpunk elements of Id:Invaded heighten this anime’s uniqueness. Coupled with an excellent musical score, the ambiance conjured up is entirely absorbing. The psychological aspects of the show stand in a league of their own, prompting deep thought, reflection, and rousing various emotional responses from viewers.

Final Verdict:

Overall, Id:Invaded is more than just a mere detective thriller. It’s an exploration of conscience, the human mind, and how technology can both aid and impair our understanding of what it means to be human. If you’re someone whose interest is piqued by psychological thrillers packed with thought-provoking narratives and unique, surreal visuals, this anime is a must-watch. Whether you choose to rent, buy, or stream, Id:Invaded is a worthwhile addition to any anime fan’s collection.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun

Lerche
12 episodes · TV Completed
7.84

The famous "Seven Wonders" that every school seems to have are a staple of Japanese urban legends. One of the most well-known of these tales is that of Hanako-san: the ghost of a young girl who haunts the school's bathrooms.

Kamome Academy has its own version of Hanako-san's legend. Rumors claim that if one successfully manages to summon Hanako-san, she will grant her summoner any wish. Lured by the gossip, many people have tried to call upon her, yet every attempt has failed. However, when Nene Yashiro, a girl hoping for romantic fortune, dares to summon Hanako-san, she discovers that the rumored "girl" is actually a boy!

After a series of unfortunate events involving Nene's romantic desires, she is unwillingly entangled in the world of the supernatural, becoming Hanako-kun's assistant. Soon, she finds out about Hanako-kun's lesser-known duty: maintaining the fragile balance between mortals and apparitions.

Reviewing Jibaku Shounen Hanako-Kun: Bonds That Break The Boundary

A Synopsis

Meditate on the sounds of schoolyard whispers, and you just might be lucky—or unlucky enough—to hear the seventh wonder of the school, Hanako-san’s cheerful laughter. Welcome to the captivating world of “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun”, translated as “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun”. The series animates a tale of an ordinary highschooler, Nene Yashiro, with an extraordinary fascination for the supernatural, resulting in her adventurous encounters with various “school wonders” circulating in her school’s many urban legends.

One tale in particular captures Nene’s attention—the mysterious “Hanako-san of the Toilet”, a spirit said to grant wishes to those who summon him. Her desperate wish for a love charm to ensnare her school crush brings her face to face with Hanako-san, who turns out to be the charming, mischievous spirit Hanako-kun. The series unravels strands of friendship, supernatural mystery, charming absurdity, and heartrending reveals that go beyond initial expectations of a common ghost story.

A Critique

With its unique blend of light-hearted humor, chills, and emotional depth, “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun” quickly captivates its audiences, making it a must-stream for any anime fan looking to dive into the world of the supernatural! The balance between comedy and the deeply thought-provoking script is impeccable. The roundabout way the plot spirals around the characters enables their depth and complexity to shine through without overpowering nor distracting from the supernatural side of the narrative.

The animation style is a blend of tradition and modern manga aesthetics; it’s beautifully crafted, offering multi-layered visuals that simultaneously stimulate your senses. The color palette is bright and fun, which is a surprising contrast to the supernatural theme of the show but works stunningly well to create its distinctive style.

However, what really sets “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun” apart and entices viewers to stay for the long haul isn’t merely its catchy art; it’s the characters’ development and the consistency of their interpersonal relationships. Characters rarely stay static—they continuously grow, learn, and change true to their distinct personalities and quirks. You’ll discover, laugh, and feel emotional pain with them as they face supernatural trials and deal with their personal emotional dilemmas, making the viewing experience immersive and genuinely emotional.

The Verdict

To sum up, “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun” is more than a charming tale of an unusual friendship or an exploration of school-life with a supernatural filter. It’s a thoughtful portrayal of how bonds are formed, tested, and redefined, making the supernatural elements more than just a premise but an integral part of the character-experience.

Whether you’re a newbie to the genre or a seasoned anime enthusiast, this series deserves a spot in your must-watch list. With its abnormal balancing act between spooky, comedy, and sentimentality, “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun” is genuinely worth your time and attention. So, the verdict? Buy, rent, or stream, no matter how you plan to watch it—it promises not to disappoint! Hurry up and join us on this emotional roller coaster through the mysterious school halls. Let’s unravel its secrets together!
